Our review of the Fujitsu fi-6130 Duplex Scanner

The value of the Fujitsu fi-6130 is in its ability to perform a variety of tasks on its own. As stated, it can scan eighteen (18) double sided pages per minute. Many of its functions are also automated, such as organization of business card information, auto paper size detection, auto de-skew and auto blank page removal functions. It can also create PDF files and directly scan MS office applications, a feature quite new for scanners of this class.

As for the hardware, there is an Automatic Document Feeder array allowing for duplex color scanning output. Its image sensor allows for colored, black and white and bi-tonal detection for more accurate scanning with a 2x Color CCD or charged coupled device. The dpi resolution can be modified depending upon the need and the requirements of the user. There is the Normal mode, with settings of 150 dpi for color and 300 dpi for black and white scans. In its duplex mode, the speed is a whopping eighteen (18) pages per minute or the equivalent 36 images per minute. In the Better mode, the color increases to 200 dpi while for black and white scans, the dpi resolution is at 400. In this mode, the duplex mode is at 12 pages per minute or 24 images per minute. In the Best mode, the color resolution is at 300 dpi and 600 dpi for black and white scans. Using the duplex function is at six (6) pages per minute or 12 images per minute. In its Excellent mode, the color resolution is at 600 dpi while the black and white is at 1,200 dpi. In this mode, the duplex function is lowered to a page a minute.

For users of the Fujitsu fi-6130, the automatic feeder uses a double roll feeder that prevents double feeds or paper jams. This also increases the speed of the unit and the reliability in the handling of the documents. The drawback though is the set-up of the scanner. The software provided has overlapping functions, resulting in the need to open multiple programs to perform tasks. Another problem is the PDF scanning as there is no automated naming convention, requiring manual naming of each file created.
